M4.6: Radon
First, I loved this video. I thought it was very well planned and executed. I think Radon is a very interesting topic and one that I am familiar with. I am from New York and law there requires Radon testing if you're a homeowner. In order to get homeowner's insurance now, or in some cases even to get a mortgage, the property must be tested for Radon. I'd never really heard of Radon being a health issue until a friend if mine tried to change his homeowner's insurance to a new company. As part of that, the new insurer required Radon testing which was done and showed very unsafe levels of Radon in his home. A major issue that his home was just over 200 years and still had a stone foundation. The basement of the house was air tight (and filled with Radon apparently) and it required a lot of work to install a Radon mitigation system. Beyond the work, it also cost thousands of dollars. I think any campaign to make the public more aware of Radon is good, because most people seem to have no idea that Radon is even a thing, but beyond that, there should also be more funding/grant opportunities for people to fix the problem. In many cases, I am sure those who are living in homes with high levels of Radon may not have the means financially to actually fix the problem.

Hey Doug,
ReplyDeleteVery interesting to read how you are familiar with Radon. I only know of it from the Periodic table and being a gas; besides that the video we watched educated me on Radon. I like hearing prosecptives from other states as I have lived in San Francisco my whole life and eventually plan to make my way to the east coast one day. New York sounds like a location that would have Radon testing as people have inhabited the area for centuries now. Quite interesting to hear that a 200 year old house has radon in the basement; then again chemicals might have been in use from centuries ago that are still found on the land.
