M7.7: Agency Role

I looked into the Department of Energy’s Office of Legacy Management.  Right away, it’s interesting to me that the Department of Energy is linked with the environment in any way; to me it seems someone ironic.  In any case, the Office of Legacy Management at the U.S. Department of Energy is responsible for managing the responsibilities related to radioactive and chemical waste, environmental contamination and hazardous materials.  This is directly related to waste from the “legacy” of World War II and the Cold War, and affects more than one hundred sites across the country.  The department works to contain and clean up these hazardous materials left over from these wars which still even to this day could affect the health of millions living near these sites.

  1. I didn't know about the Office of Legacy Management before. It sounds interesting (and unfortunate that these issues persist!). I think it makes sense that the Dept of Energy would be linked with the environment. This would be the Dept working on renewable energy as well, right?

  2. I am glad to hear there is ab agency that exists who goal is to clean up hazardous waste from wars of years past. These chemicals can be left to rot and taint our soils and waters and they need to be monitored to not spread anymore than what they are.
